Your Guide to the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for English Language Learners

Understanding the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a travel permit that all non-visa nationals must obtain before travelling to the UK for short visits. Introduced in 2023, the ETA simplifies the process for eligible travellers while reinforcing UK border security. If you’re planning a trip to the UK for tourism, business, or study for up to six months, here’s everything you need to know about the ETA.

What is the ETA?

The ETA is not a visa but a digital permit to travel to the UK. From 2 April 2025, European visitors will also need to apply for an ETA before entering the UK. The permit costs £10 and is valid for two years, allowing multiple visits of up to six months each.

Who Needs an ETA?

You will need an ETA if:

  • You are a non-visa national travelling to the UK for up to six months.

  • You are an EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen travelling after 2 April 2025.

However, you do not need an ETA if:

  • You hold a British or Irish passport.

  • You have permission to live, work, or study in the UK.

  • You are a visa-national (in which case, you will require a relevant visa).

How to Apply for an ETA

The application process is designed to be quick and convenient. You can apply either via the UK ETA app or an online form.

Applying via the UK ETA App

  1. Download the app: Available on the App Store and Google Play.

  2. Prepare your information: Ensure you have everything ready, as the process must be completed within 20 minutes.

  3. Requirements:

    • A valid email address.

    • A photo of yourself (if you are applying for someone else, they must be present).

    • The passport you will use to travel to the UK.

    • A payment method (credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay).

    • Contact details for a parent or guardian if you are under 18.

Applying Online

If you cannot use the app, you can complete the application via the online form.

  1. Upload a photo of your passport.

  2. Scan your face using your device’s camera.

  3. Upload a recent photo of yourself.

  4. Answer questions about your address, occupation, criminal history, and any other nationalities.

  5. Submit the form and pay the fee.

What Happens After You Apply?

Once your application is submitted:

  • You will receive a confirmation email.

  • You can expect a decision within three working days, though decisions may sometimes come through more quickly.

  • In some cases, processing may take longer than three days.

Once approved, the ETA is linked digitally to the passport used during the application. If you receive a new passport during the two-year period, you will need to apply for a new ETA.

Travelling to the UK with an ETA

When entering the UK, your ETA will be automatically verified against your passport, so there is no need to present a physical document. However, having an ETA does not guarantee entry. You may still be required to speak to a Border Force officer or use an ePassport gate if eligible.

Important Reminders

  • An ETA is a permit to travel, not a visa.

  • Visa nationals must apply for the appropriate visa based on their reason for travel.

  • If you plan to study in the UK for seven to 11 months as a non-visa national, you must apply for a Short-Term Study Visa instead of an ETA.

Key Visa Information for Longer Stays

  • Standard Visitor Visa: Required for visa nationals for visits up to six months. (Learn more)

  • Short-Term Study Visa (English Language): Required for non-visa nationals intending to study English in the UK for seven to 11 months. (Learn more)

The introduction of the ETA aims to streamline travel to the UK, making it more efficient for short-term visitors. By understanding the requirements and ensuring you complete the application process correctly, you can avoid unnecessary delays and enjoy a hassle-free journey.

Zoe took Live Online English classes with us and was so kind as to share her experience with us. ‘When I first heard about having online classes I was quite sceptical about it. However, I gave it a go and now I’m very happy. Clearly, it isn’t the same as normal classes, but at the moment there isn’t a better solution to the actual situation. Before the school had to close temporarily, we did a meeting on Zoom between the classes in different classrooms and our teachers showed us how it works. Don’t worry, you'll be absolutely fine - it’s very easy. Zoom is an online platform, similar to Skype, which gives us a lot of opportunities to create virtual classes. From improving our speaking skills to practise our listening or watching videos together there’s almost nothing you can’t do. It’s fascinating how authentic online-classes are to real ones. What’s more, our teachers are as motivated as they were in school and they try hard to give their best effort. It is a new experience for all of us, but we learn together and that’s great fun! I’m very grateful to have these modern techniques nowadays, which help us, even more, to keep in touch with each other in times like these.’ Zoe - Switzerland,
