The Housing Situation for Young People by Yaiza from Spain
The purpose of this report is to determine the different housing options for young people, as well as the problems they have to face and if there are going to be changes in the future. This report has been written on behalf of The International Research Group.
A focus group of young people and adults were invited to attend a meeting in order to collect together their thoughts and opinions on this topic.
The results of the investigation were surprising; there are not many options for young people:
• Living with parents
• Communal flats
• Residence
The main problem stated about living with parents is that individuals do not really have independence and freedom. It is because of this that many young people are looking for communal or student flats, where they share a flat with other young people; but there are not many flats like this, and they are really expensive. This is why students who have really good marks are given a room in a student residence.
The ideas that were collected were as follows:
• Government should provide flats/residences for young people
• Students have to have good marks to get a place to stay
• Government should help young people economically so they can be independent
In conclusion, government has to help youngsters build new residences as well as financially, so they can be independent while they are studying. The sooner they are independent the more they learn, which will be a benefit for everyone’s future.
Employment Prospects for Young People in South-Tyrol by Sofia from Italy
The aim of this report is to carry out research in South-Tyrol to determine the employment opportunities for young people. This report has been written on behalf of an international research group, who are currently carrying out an investigation into the employment prospects for young people all around the world.
Unemployment is a problem which is unfortunately spreading all over the world, affecting the lives of young people that are desperately trying to get a job. A focus group of students aged between 18 and 35 were invited to attend a meeting so that they could share and discuss their opinions regarding this common issue in South-Tyrol.
The results of the investigation were somewhat shocking: in fact, there are more young employed Germans than young employed Italians. This fact can be explained through the history of South-Tyrol: elements of ethnic and environmental conflict have been present in the northern Italian province of South-Tyrol since Roman times. The principle clash of cultures came during and after World War II when the local German-speaking population was inundated with Italian speakers; since then, Germans have prevailed over the Italians. The investigation also shows that even if Italian students are well-qualified and were given excellent education, they still have difficulties getting a job which matches their abilities.
In conclusion, every student that wants to get a job should sit an exam that tests their real abilities, whilst more young unemployed Italians should be involved in major tourism projects and be employed in hydroelectric power centres.
