The exam centre affiliated with Wimbledon School of English is now offering Cambridge YLE exams! We spoke to Renata from the London Exam Centre to find out how young students could benefit from taking this exam.

 

-          Hi Renata! What do we need to know about the Cambridge YLE exam?

-           Cambridge YLE is a course designed to introduce children to everyday written and spoken English. It is an excellent way for them to gain confidence and improve their English language skills.

 

-          How do students pass the exam?

-          There is no pass or fail! Students are tested on four skills – Listening, Reading and Writing and Speaking. They can gain a maximum of five ‘shields’ for each skill. At the end of the course all students receive an award based on their number of shields.

 

-          What level do students need to be to take the exam?

-           The exam is designed for three different levels: Pre-level A1, A1 and A2.

 

-          When is the exam? 

-           The exam is organised according to demand, so we would require a minimum number of candidates to show interest in order to organise it.

 

-          Is it a well recognised qualification?

-           Yes, it’s part of Cambridge English exams family!

 

-          Is it different to the Cambridge English exams for adults?

-           Yes, Cambridge YLE is specifically designed for children between 5-14 years old.

 

-          Where will the qualification take me?

-          YLE will help you to prepare for other Cambridge English exams you may wish to take in the future. Otherwise you can simply use it to enjoy books, songs, TV and films in English.

 

-          Should I take the Cambridge or the IELTS exam?

-           There’s no IELTS equivalent to YLE as IELTS is designed from B1 level for adults– so YLE exams are a good starting point for children.
