Learning a new language is an exciting journey, but one of the most common questions students ask is: How long does it take to learn English? The answer depends on several factors, including your starting level, the amount of time you dedicate to learning, and the environment in which you study. In this guide, we’ll explore how long it takes to progress through different levels of English and share some top tips for accelerating your learning.
Understanding the CEFR Levels at WSE
At Wimbledon School of English (WSE), we use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to define our levels of study:
-
A1–A2 (Beginner/Elementary)
-
B1 (Pre-Intermediate)
-
B1+ (Intermediate)
-
B2 (Higher Intermediate)
-
B2+ (Higher Intermediate Plus)
-
C1 (Advanced)
-
C1+ (Advanced Plus)
-
C2 (Proficiency)
Each level requires a different amount of study time. On average, according to Cambridge and British Council estimates, it takes 200-300 hours of guided learning to progress from one level to the next.
Estimated Time to Learn English by Level
At Wimbledon School of English, we describe our courses in weeks, based on the number of hours per week you study. Our main course options are:
-
Essential Course (17.5 hours per week)
-
Standard Course (21 hours per week)
-
Intensive Course (24.5 hours per week)
Here’s an estimate of how long it may take to progress through levels, depending on your course choice:
-
Essential Course: 12-15 weeks per level
-
Standard Course: 10-12 weeks per level
-
Intensive Course: 8-10 weeks per level
If you want to learn English as quickly as possible, enrolling in an Intensive Course is the best option. With more hours of study per week, you’ll be able to reach your target level in a shorter amount of time. This is especially beneficial for students preparing for exams, moving to an English-speaking country, or looking to improve their job prospects quickly.
For a motivated learner studying full-time in an immersive environment (such as an English-speaking country), fluency (B2/C1) can often be achieved within 6 months to 1 year. However, for part-time learners, it might take several years to reach the same level.
Factors That Affect Your Learning Speed
Several factors influence how quickly you can learn English:
-
Time Spent Learning: The more hours you dedicate each week, the faster you progress.
-
Language Immersion: Living in an English-speaking country or regularly interacting with first-language English speakers or other English language learners speeds up the process.
-
Quality of Instruction: Studying at an accredited language school with experienced teachers (like Wimbledon School of English!) can significantly improve learning efficiency.
-
Learning Methods: A mix of listening, speaking, reading, and writing helps reinforce new skills more effectively.
-
Previous Language Experience: If you already speak a language with similarities to English (such as German or Dutch), you may learn faster.
Tips to Learn English Faster
If you want to speed up your English learning journey, try these strategies:
-
Immerse yourself: Watch English films, listen to podcasts, and read books in English.
-
Practice speaking daily: Join conversation clubs or find a language partner. At WSE, we offer Conversation Clubs, giving you the chance to practise speaking English with other language learners in a relaxed and supportive environment.
-
Take an intensive course: Enrolling in a full-time English course can accelerate your progress.
-
Use technology: Apps like Duolingo, BBC Learning English, and Quizlet can reinforce vocabulary and grammar. AI tools like ChatGPT can also be a great way to practise your English—whether by typing conversations, asking it to correct your writing, or even speaking to it to improve your pronunciation.
-
Stay consistent: Even studying for 30 minutes a day can make a big difference over time. At WSE, expect up to 2 hours of homework each day during your English course.
